Oliver Mayerhoffer
I was raised in the UK until I could leave — and leaving taught me more about who I am than staying ever did. I write for Mangoes & Palm Trees with Natalia and Victor: what we cook, where we go, and what this beautiful, painful world of food and travel feels like when you refuse to live someone else’s normal.
Who is Oliver Mayerhoffer?
Oliver Mayerhoffer is the lead author, father, and cook behind Mangoes & Palm Trees. He publishes family-tested recipes and travel guides from lived movement across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia — with 2026 Southeast Asia notes alongside Natalia and Victor Mayerhoffer.
Cheltenham-born; left Britain young; built a life on the road with Natalia and Victor. This archive is where he tells the Mayerhoffer story in the open.
How I ended up writing from a family table
Not a résumé. The arc that explains why the site sounds the way it does.
I was born in Cheltenham in 1990 — British mother, Austrian father. Childhood tasted like Richard’s garden next door, Great Aunty Gabbi’s bread, and Mediterranean holidays where salt and lemon did the seasoning.
Even then I carried the strongest feeling of not belonging. Britain raised me until sixteen, when I finally left — and by eighteen I had left for good, stopping back only when life demanded paperwork, family, or a door I could not yet close.
Those returns still pull me towards a person and a time I am not. I am a free spirit. I never flowed easily with society’s normals, and I thrive in turbulent environments — immersing myself in culture, trying to find myself along the way.
At fifteen I crossed India by train; spice markets and street food rewired how I read a plate. Teen years in Uncle Wolfgang’s Austrian kitchen taught me careful hands and mise en place without making me announce them in every paragraph.
Oman and Dubai came next — hotel floors, booking channels, the pressure of filling rooms. Then sailing out of Spain, backpacking through Cambodia and Laos, and a monk chapter on Koh Chang that slowed the noise long enough to listen.
I met Natalia on that island in 2014. We married in Krasnoyarsk the following year.
By the time we were expecting our first child, the road had already changed shape. Victor was born in Koh Samui in November 2016 — and the journey stopped being only mine.
Six UK years followed: documents, school, weight. We lost my mother Julie and my brother Daniel. Natalia’s grandparents Valentina and Victor Moskalenko passed too.
Mangoes & Palm Trees began in 2018 — not as a brand exercise, but as a place to turn what we had lived into something another family could use. We sold the house and came back to Asia.
Oddly, it was when I felt most lost that I recognised who I was meant to be. On the road with Natalia and Victor through unsettled years, the free spirit stopped apologising for itself.
Vietnam in 2024. Southeast Asia still, now — growing, documenting everything I can. This site is where I tell the world about us: the Mayerhoffers as individuals and as a whole, and what this beautiful, painful world of food and travel means to us.

Places that shaped the voice
Cheltenham & Europe
Garden veg next door, Austrian Sundays, Mediterranean coast cooking — the baseline palate.
India by train
Rajasthan to Himachal — spice markets, street food.
The first time food felt like geography.
Austrian apprenticeship
Uncle Wolfgang’s kitchen — knife work, order, the careful eye I still use without naming it.
Oman · Spain · Asia
Hotel floors taught me to notice service under pressure; sailing and backpacking through Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, and Korea taught me to listen on the road.
Family & founding
Koh Chang, Krasnoyarsk, Samui, Mangoes and Palm Trees born from loss we refuse to waste.
Vietnam · Southeast Asia
French-colonial food divides, then live regional notes — publishing weekly with the family.
Where the noticing came from
Middle East · hotel floors
Rooms, booking channels, campaigns — commercial clarity when occupancy was the measure that mattered.
Independent businesses
UK and US e-commerce, affiliate systems, lead generation — wins measured, stalls noted honestly.
Publishing systems
Paid search, analytics, landing pages, and site structure under real spend — the craft behind how guides get built.
Mangoes & Palm Trees
Lead author with Natalia and Victor — weekly travel notes, recipes, and the family archive we keep open.
Digital presence studio
Founded AI Search Websites to help owners build clear foundations first — architecture before campaigns, no ranking promises.
What that means on the page
You get specificity — prices, parking, broth weight — because I learned to notice kitchens and service long before I learned to publish. Years on the road with Natalia and Victor mean every guide carries what we actually saw, tested, and would use again. Corroborated on LinkedIn and About.me.
