Hawaiian shaved ice cream is extremely popular in Hawaii due to its light and fluffy texture. Each bite will instantly melt in your mouth.

By itself, Hawaiian shaved ice has a very bland flavor, which is why you will often be offered a fruit syrup to drizzle over it.

You can get fruit syrups in a broad range of flavors.

However, if you find yourself with an excess of fruit, you could make your own fruit flavored syrups to top your own homemade Hawaiian shaved ice cream with. Both happen to be incredibly simple to recreate at home.

In this article, we will show you all the steps involved in making a Hawaiian shaved ice cream with homemade fruit flavored syrup.

What Is Hawaiian Shaved Ice Cream?

Since the days of the plantations, Hawaiian shave ice has been a popular treat in Hawaii. The Japanese invented shaved ice, also known as kakigori, or shaved ice.

The workmen would drop by the shaved ice shop after a long day of work to cool off with a fluffy shaved ice sprinkled with delicious syrup.

Although many people refer to the dessert as “shaved ice,” the term “shave ice” is also used in some areas.

In any case, the fluffiness and range of syrup tastes, including lycée, lilikoi, matcha, etc., are what make Hawaiian shave ice so distinctive.

What Is The Difference Between Shaved Ice And Snow Cones?

Shaved ice melts in your mouth and has a softer texture similar to snow. It is taken straight from an ice block.

Whereas, mainland America is where the snow cone was first created. Its ice seems to be more crushed, making it crunchier and more slush-like in texture.

How you are crushing the ice, is what makes the difference between the two.

How To Make Hawaiian Shaved Ice Cream

To make shaved ice, you need a vital piece of equipment. A shaved ice machine would be ideal in this scenario, especially if you are going to be making shaved ice regularly.

You can easily find shaved ice machines on Amazon, if you do wish to purchase one.

A shaved ice machine allows you to shred your ice to the right thinness and create the perfect texture.

With that being said, if you own a margarita machine, if you use it on the highest blend mode, then you can finely grate your ice.

You may not achieve the exact same thickness, but it is as close as you will get it without a shaved ice machine.

How To Make Fruit Flavored Syrup

When it comes to fruit flavored syrups to use, the flavors you choose are up to. Below, we are going to show you how to make a couple of different fruit flavors.

Strawberry Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of sugar
  • 2 pounds of strawberries
  • 4 cups of water

Method:

  • Step 1 – Rinse the berries, then slice the stems with a knife to remove them.  The strawberries should be cut into small cubes and added to a medium saucepan.
  • Step 2 – Add enough water to fully cover the strawberries and bring this mixture to a boil.
  • Step 3 – After that, turn down the heat to medium-high, simmer the mixture for 20 minutes, and then skim off any froth that may have formed on top. Once the strawberries have lost their color as well as the water turning red or pink, remove from heat.
  • Step 4 – Utilizing a strainer, strain the berries from the liquid. Don’t push on the berries to get more juice unless you want your syrup to become cloudy.
  • Step 5 – Then, add all the sugar to the mixture, and cook it until the sugar has disappeared.
  • Step 6 – Finally, take the mixture off the stove, allow it to cool fully, then chill it.

Pineapple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 1 small pineapple
  • 4 cups of sugar
  • 2 cups of water

Method:

  • Step 1 – Fill a container with sugar and water. Then peel and chop a pineapple into small chunks and add to the liquids.
  • Step 2 – Give the mixture 24 hours to rest.
  • Step 3 –  After that, take out the pineapple and crush it using a hand juicer.
  • Step 4 – In a pot, warm the mixture over medium heat. Simmer it for 5 to 10 minutes. Stir continuously and allow it to gently reduce.
  • Step 5 –  Pass the liquid through a tea strainer or cheesecloth strainer. Then allow it to chill.

Serving Hawaiian Shaved Ice Cream

When it comes to serving Hawaiian shaved ice cream, your shaved ice should be placed in a glass, followed by your choice of homemade syrup.

You can combine two or more syrups simultaneously to create a rainbow appearance and a variety of flavors. Although, to make it creamier, you can also top it with 3 to 4 ounces of evaporated milk.

Furthermore, you can add your preferred garnishes, such as whipped cream, strawberries, and chopped almonds. There are a lot of options out there for you to choose from, so you shouldn’t feel limited.
