The plane started its descent to Kauai, Hawaii.
Looking out the window I could see the warm blue water sparkling in the tropical sun. My husband and two kids and myself are here to visit relatives. It is our Christmas holiday and the excitement of the moment wraps around me. It is going to be two fun filled weeks of family and friends. My kids hardly ever get to go to Hawaii, so they are excited about it.
Kauai is one of the main Hawaiian islands in the chain. Located in the Pacific ocean, Kauai is known as the garden island. The reason for this is clear when the cascading waterfalls and lush greenery greet you . It is the least developed island and I have always been very proud of it. Words fail me when describing its beauty, you just have to see it for yourself.
Once the plane lands we are greeted with sweet scented leis and family hugs. Native Hawaiians like my family are warm people with ancient traditions. My kids look on with shyness but once surrounded by family they relax.
The drive is beautiful with fringy palm trees and sugar sand beaches. I did not realize how much I had missed Hawaii until I was here again. The car pulled up to a lovely place right on a breath taking beach and I could feel my body relax. Even though it was close to Christmas time the weather here was mild to warm. No freezing winters here in fact even at night I barely needed a sweater.
We visited the Papalani Gelato shop and experienced the treat of creamy gelato. When we entered the shop I could see a rainbow of flavors behind a glass case. I wanted to try them all. This is handmade each day in small batches. We had heard of this unique place and wanted to try it for ourselves.
The owners Marck and Lauren Shipley took the Italian gelato that they discovered in Italy and created a Hawaiian version. At their shop in Po’ipu, Kauai they sell handmade chocolates, gelatos, and sorbettos. They use seasonal fruits and local flavors to create memorable gelatos to enjoy. I noticed flavors such as mango, pineapple, coconut, papaya, many others.
Since my relatives lived within walking distance of Papalani gelato, I loved going there almost daily. I loved the breezy sunwashed walk along the beach and what awaited me inside. We tried a new flavor each time. The first trip I had pineapple and my husband had chocolate hazelnut. The kids had banana split and bubble gum and loved it. I loved each flavor especially the white chocolate raspberry one.
Papalani Gelato has other frozen treats that you can try, too. Gelato bars and sandwiches are made with your choice of gelato flavor and some freshly baked chocolate chip cookies or sweet bread. These can also be created with frozen yogurt or sorbetto flavors.
One of my husbands favorite items at Papalani was the Signature Breeze. This was chosen from a list of breezes. A breeze is another name for a shake.
These are made with nonfat milk or juices. Another treat is frozen bananas dipped in real dark chocolate and topped with sprinkles. So delicious like a Popsicle on a stick.
Their handmade chocolates contain many tropical ingredients like coffee, macadamia nut, mango, coconut, pineapple, banana, also added are ginger, lavender, peppers, and exotic spices. Each chocolate is unique because they are hand-made.
Our relatives enjoyed strolling with us each evening along the beach. The sun setting in shades of rose and gold reflecting in the water. I am so glad we spent time there introducing the kids to Hawaiian life and tropical flavors. These memories will always be with me of our visit to Hawaii.
If you visit Kauai do stop by and visit the Papalani Gelato shop. It was truly one of the high points of our trip and the kids still talk about it. The owners greet you with warmth and the atmosphere is very welcoming. I enjoyed trying the fresh fruity flavors. After being out in the warm sunshine it was refreshing to step into this shop.
